Quaint, clean, safe riad in the old town - but difficult to find on the first night.
Lovely Riad in the old town - not a lot of staff around, but those that were were very polite, and helpful. We had 2 rooms, on different floors, with ensuite showers, air conditioning/heat. We were provided padlocks and keys for the door - not sure how secure that was, but it felt safe, and we 3 women had no problems in the few days that we were there. My room had a great shower, my friend's had a clogged drain the first night (they fixed it the next day. AC/heat worked fine, shampoo, bodywash, towels were provided. The room had a comfy bed, desk, chair, lamp - pretty basic but clean and quiet (other than the mosque call to prayer 5 times a day!). Breakfast was carbs, boiled eggs, fruit, olives, coffee, mint tea and orange juice. 2 minute walk to the souk which was crowded (narrow streets) with vendors, motorcycles and tourists. We felt safe though, and bought some nice items.
Really, the only downers - we arrived after dark, and were not told that taxis cannot fit down the narrow streets, so they dropped us off at the Porte Laksour (an archway into the old town) and we had to walk - on cobblestones, at night. Our Google map said it would take us 8 minutes to walk, but it took us 20, because the narrow alleys/streets are not lit well, nor marked well. This was a bit unnerving for 3 women at night, but there was nothing to be done about it as there were very few people about to ask for directions (other than a couple women begging on the street, with their child in arms, so sad!) Once we found it, we were warmly welcomed and shown our rooms, promptly, where we collapsed!
On our departure day, we were allowed to leave our bags in the office for a few hours for some last minute shopping, and the staff person called us a taxi and walked us to the Porte Laksour to make sure we got in the right taxi. Downer - he said our City taxes hadn't been paid and asked for money. Our room had been paid in advance, in full, on Booking and he backed off, but it left a bad impression, as we felt perhaps we were being tricked. In the souk, we felt like perhaps we had 'tourist' written on our foreheads - but we were happy to pay their prices as we were not comfortable haggling for a lower price, which is apparently a customary thing. No matter, we found their items of good quality and reasonably priced, so was happy to add to their economy.
I would stay at this riad, rather than a corporate hotel, if in Marrakesh again. It was very authentically Moroccan, and once we figured out how to get 'home' at the end of each day (in the dark), it was a lovely place to stay, but don't expect the Hilton, more like a bed and breakfast, with real people, providing hospitable service.
