Visitors to Tasmania often focus solely on the two big cities; Launceston and Hobart. But if you've got a few days up your sleeve you should take a drive up the Lyell Highway, over the West Coast Range and down into Strahan. It's a pretty village, perched on the edge of the tannin stained waters of Macquarie Harbour. The region is steeped in history, from timber loggers of the much prized Huon Pine, to the hydro workers that established the amazing network of dams to supply electric power to the state. For activities you could take a cruise out onto the harbour and up the Gordon River, or you could ride the train into the rainforest. There is so much to do and see, you'll wonder why you didn't book for longer!
